5 Hidden Toxins your Cleaning Products don’t want you to Know About

You grab a few cleaning products at the local big box store. They’re selling the cleaner so it must be safe – or so we assume. Yet, the truth is that many harmful toxins can be found in everyday cleaning products in homes across the United States.

Surprisingly, there are zero federal statutes regarding the regulation of different chemicals in products we use around the house. Products are not required to go through any testing process, nor meet any set of safety standards. This means any cleaning product you bring into your household could contain numerous toxins.

These toxins have been shown to cause:

  • Asthma
  • Cancer
  • Hormone disruption
  • Neurotoxicity
  • Reproductive disorders

…And a number of other ailments!

While many household cleaning product manufacturers claim the toxic ingredients are featured in such a small amount that here should be no issues – we are often exposed to these chemicals on a routine basis. This routine exposure raises the toxin levels in our tissues to new heights and can cause a number of the health ailments seen above.

You’ll never completely avoid exposure to toxic chemicals. However, you can significantly lower your “toxic burden” by swapping toxin-laden household cleaning products for natural, safer options.

If you choose to do so, here are five chemicals you need to get out of your house first:

  • Phthalates

Phthalates are found in numerous household products that are “fragrance” to smell lovely. This lovely smell that you find in many air fresheners, soaps, and hand cleaning products is actually the health hazardous phthalates. Phthalates can reduce sperm count in men and lead to migraines and asthma issues in anybody.

  • Triclosan

Most antibacterial soaps and dishwashing detergents have triclosan as an active ingredient. Triclosan is a strong antibacterial agent that promotes the growth of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. As well, many have claimed that the toxin may be a carcinogen.

  • Quats

“Quats”, or quarternary ammonium compounds, are found in antibacterial products and fabric softeners. Quats are known to cause dermatitis, lead to respiratory disorders, and breed antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

  • 2-Butoxyethanol

Many multipurpose cleaners, window cleaners, and kitchen cleaners feature 2-butoxyethanol. In small doses, this powerful toxin can lead to a sore throat. At a high concentration, 2-butoxyethanol can lead to severe liver and kidney damage.

  • “Percs”

“Percs”, or perchloroethylene, is found in many dry-cleaners and carpet cleaning products. The neurotoxin is considered a possible carcinogen. Even in small doses, percs can cause dizziness and a severe loss of coordination.
